Trauma-Sensitive Classroom Management
To be a master teacher, you also need to know how to manage student behavior. In my 20 years as a classroom teacher, I have developed a trauma-sensitive approach that support students in managing their own behavior by providing firm, predictable, and loving boundaries. Some techniques that characterize my approach:
- Greeting students at the door before class every day
- Regular agenda with regular routines
- Paper/pencil warm-ups at the beginning of every class
- Relationship development with my most challenging students
- Strategic assigned seats
- Attention getters
- One-on-one conferences with students in the hallway (Q1, Q2)
- Visual classroom discipline approach documenting warnings and consequences
- Regular parent communication including classroom newsletters
- Timers
