""Love through structure."

Trauma-Sensitive Classroom Management

To be a master teacher, you also need to know how to manage student behavior.  In my 20 years as a classroom teacher, I have developed a trauma-sensitive approach that support students in managing their own behavior by providing firm, predictable, and loving boundaries.  Some techniques that characterize my approach:

  • Greeting students at the door before class every day
  • Regular agenda with regular routines
  • Paper/pencil warm-ups at the beginning of every class
  • Relationship development with my most challenging students
  • Strategic assigned seats
  • Attention getters
  • One-on-one conferences with students in the hallway (Q1, Q2)
  • Visual classroom discipline approach documenting warnings and consequences
  • Regular parent communication including classroom newsletters
  • Timers
