LEADERSHIP
Created during the summer of 2020 as the capstone for the completion of Administration/Supervision MEd program at the University of Virginia
Team Leader
For the 2020-2021 school year, I was selected by principal Brenda Walton to serve as a 7th grade team leader of the Hurricanes. In that capacity I...
- Organize and chair weekly Team Meetings
- Design, compose and distribute quarterly newsletters
- Lead teachers through the solution-oriented process of identifying problems, prescribing solutions, and monitoring progress toward identified goals
- Spearhead communication with families including quarterly newsletters and set up parent/teacher conferences
- Lead teachers through the development of student behavior plans
- Serve as a conduit between school/district level specialists and the Team
Instructional Leader
During my time at WMMS, I was selected to serve as a Lead Innovator, focusing on the Communication and Collaboration Pillar. As a Lead Innovator, I demonstrated instructional leadership by
- Providing a model for the effective integration of technology for the purpose of increasing engagement and student achievement.
- Serving as resource to my peers and working to develop a vast bank of resources for collaboration.
Professional Development
I have supported the growth of teacher-peers by developing and presenting at numerous conferences for teachers including the two most recent VSTE Conferences and the GCPS Summer New Teacher Summit.
In 2019 I developed a variety of synchronous and asynchronous professional development materials on the use of flexible stations in elementary and high school math classrooms. These materials were created as part of an interview package I created when I applied for the position New Teacher Mentorship Coordinator at GCPS.
Civics Lead
From 2019-2021, I have worked to provide leadership to the Civics Team of teachers as we respond to the COVID-19 Pandemic.
During the 2020-2021 school year I have led content-level meetings including revising the curriculum pacing guide, setting times, creating agendas, and moderating meetings. With the support of the WMMS Instructional Coach, I created structures to facilitate collaboration among the three Civics teachers. I further facilitated collaboration by ensuring that teachers adhere to the revised pacing guide and creating common assessments.
During the school closures of Spring 2019, I revised the pacing guide for Civics and Economics to reflect our truncated school year. In addition, I created templates for asynchronous instruction in Civics as well as models for progress monitoring of students.
Organizational Leader
In a life dedicated to education, I have worked in public and private institutions, middle school and high school. I possess extensive experience navigating the complex organizational structures of public comprehensive schools, magnet schools, elite private schools, and smaller summer programs.
As a University of Virginia MEd project, I developed a comprehensive EdTech plan to improve school-wide student literacy. My improvement aim was to support the SIP goal from 2019-2020 of improving 8th grade Reading and Writing SOL scores by 5%. My change idea is to build capacity for reading and writing instruction in non-language arts teachers by training them on how to teacher students to use WeVideo to create digital stories in their content classes (math, science, and social studies). While this change idea will not directly teach literacy, cross-curriculuar digital stories will provide students with opportunities to practice reading and writing skills in all classes. Some plan highlights include:
- Data collection to gauge school Edtech plan, Edtech literacy among teachers, inventory of leadership practices at WMMS, survey of literacy data
- Plans for redesigning the organization to facilitate Edtech plan
- Gap analysis with supporting plan for improvement
- Communication projects to set direction for Edtech integration
I led members of my graduate school cohort to complete a School Climate Walk at William Monroe Middle School in the fall of 2019.
